Episode 299 features Holler Choir from North Carolina, an Appalachian-American folk/bluegrass outfit led by the songwriting of Clint Roberts. I wanted to get Clint on the show after catching his set at the 9:30 Club, where they opened for one of my all-time favorite bands, Susto. Holler Choir is also involved in a side project called the Susto String Band, which will be bluegrass interpretations of classic Susto songs. They recently released a new EP titled "Songs Before They Write Themselves," produced by Grammy-winning producer Michael Ashworth. In this episode, I featured the track "Hard Pill" from that EP, as well as their top-streaming song "Carolina" to close out the episode. In our conversation, Clint and I talked about the origins of Holler Choir, bluegrass, the Asheville music scene, being in a co-ed band, Susto, and much more. Thanks for listening and supporting local music! We’ve got a big episode coming up for episode 300, so stay tuned!
